DESIGNS BY MR R. BENTLEY, FOR SIX POEMS BY MR T. GRAY, printed for R. Dodsley in Pall Mall, 1753 First edition, first issue, with "Drawings & c." on half-title. Title vignette, 6 engraved plates, 12 engraved head- and tail-pieces and 6 engraved initials in text; 35, [1] ff. + [4] pp. "Explanation of the Prints" [by Horace Walpole] bound at rear. The curious title, which places the emphasis on the "Designs" rather than the "Poems" was done at Gray's insistence, as he was wary of advertising this miscellaneous volume as a new collection. Most of the poems had appeared first elsewhere, though the delightful illustrations are new, as is "A Long Story" Northrup 178; Stokes, p. 43; Hazen (w) 42; Rothschild 1061 Title vignette, 6 engraved plates, 12 engraved head- and tail-pieces and 6 engraved initials in text; 35, [1] ff. + [4] pp. "Explanation of the Prints" [by Horace Walpole] bound at rear. Folio (15-1/2 x 11-1/4 inches) First edition, first issue, with "Drawings & c." on half-title
