Most renowned Dore Bible of the 19th century. Complete in every aspect. Bound in full-tooled gilt-decorated leather. Cassell's most famous printing of the 'super folio' size (15" x 12"!) of the complete series of 238 full page illustrations by the famous Gustave Dore. Including the Old Testament (1116 numbered pages with a total of 136 engravings), the Apocrypha (188 pages with 21 engravings) and the New Testament (348 pages with 81 engravings). In the 1860-1880s, The Doré Bible was likely the most treasured (and expensive) book in the world. The English edition from Cassell, Petter and Galpin, 1867 caused a demand among collectors for any and everything by Doré. Because of the demand, a number of editions in English were between 1867 and 1903 in a variety of formats, none of which were dated on the title page. This Bible set is among the earliest editions, containing 238 engravings (later editions had only 205) and in the large format of 12 by 15 inches. With separate title pages (All titles are printed in red and black) for the Old Testament, Apocrypha and New Testament. Four pages preceding the New Testament with wood-engraved borders providing space for Family Register, Births, Marriages, and Deaths. Dore s masterpiece and by far the best and most renowned edition of any Gustave Dore illustrated English language Bible produced in the 19th century. This Bible would have been expensive at the time of publication and was sold in parts. Published in London in sixty-four parts (four shillings each), and in New York in thirty parts (two dollars each, with about 8 plates and about 70 pages of biblical text in each part). Bound in full tooled and gilt decorated dark leather with gorgeous gold stamped decorations. Both volumes have the "holy Bible" in gold letters on the spine as well as 'Dore's Illustrations'. Volume 1 covers Genesis through Lamentation, Volume 2 Ezekiel to Revelation. All edges are gilt. All Dore plates present as called for in contents. Complete in every respect. Also includes the original family 'death, birth and marriage' pages, all unmarked. This Bible set is overall well preserved and in a VERY GOOD (VG) condition
