INFERNO, VISION OF HELL, and THE VISION OF PURGATORY AND PARADISE. Published by London, Paris, New York & Melbourne Cassell and Company Limited 1903. Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary and Illustrated with the Designs of M. Gustave Doré 2 volumes. With Critical and Explanatory Notes, Life of Dante, and Chronology. With 135 extraordinary Gustave Dore engravings on plates including an impressive portrait of Dante. Folio, expertly rebound 3/4 black leather bindings over blue-green cloth covered boards, the spines with 5 raised bands gilt tooled, one compartment of each volume with red morocco lettering label gilt, new spanish green marbled endpapers teg. xxiv, 183; xii, 337 pp. A fine and very attractive set of this great work. The pages are still very clean and fresh and the fine bindings are sturdy and solid and very well preserved. A VERY HANDSOME SET IN ATTRACTIVE BINDINGS. Dore s huge and spectacular illustrations bring Dante s visions to life in a style and manner to satisfy artistic appetites both subtle and grotesque. A truly grand example of the art of metal plate engraving.
