Drawings of Sir E. J. Poynter & Drawings of Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Two heavily illustrated volumes portraying the sketches of 19th century artists Edward Poynter and Edward Burne-Jones. Poynter held a number of official posts during his career and was not only the first Slade Professor at University College London from 1871 to 1875, but also served as director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1904. Malcolm Bell provides a useful commentary to Poynters drawings, which include studies for the Fresco of St. Stephen.
CONDITION In the publisher's cloth spine over hard boards. Externally, generally smart. Both volumes are a little worn to the boards, and whilst the volume on Poynter as a white mark to the rear board, the volume on Burne-Jones has a white mark to the front board. A little bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with two closed tears at the head of the volume on Poynter. Some light wear towards the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound. The gutter is visible at plate XIV to the volume on Poynter. Aside from some light offsetting to the endpapers, and a little foxing to the title page of the volume on Burne- Jones, pages are bright and clean.Edward Burne-Jones was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a loose collection of artists who sought to return to the abundant detail and intense colours of 15th century Italian art. Although Burne-Jones was heavily influenced by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, by 1870 he had developed his own distinctive style. This volume includes several studies, with an introduction and commentary by Martin Wood.Colour Plates,Illustrated,Publishers' Original Binding.
