The Winchester Psalter Folio Society limited edition Presented in facsimile with a new commentary. The books are in their original solander box. Condition: all fine/as new. The facsimile volume is printed on Biberist Furioso coated paper and bound in Indian goatskin leather with Freelife Merida endpapers by Gorenjski tisk storitive, Kranj, Slovenia. It is blocked in black & gold with a design by Joe McLaren based on details from the miniatures. The Winchester Psalter Miniature Cycle is a facsimile of folios 1 - 39 of Cotton MS Nero C. IV at the British Library. The commentary volume consists of a 15 page introduction followed by a detailed description of each miniature and an index of manuscripts. One of the first true masterpieces of medieval manuscript illumination, The Winchester Psalter is a jewel of the collection amassed by the great antiquarian Sir Robert Cotton (1570–1631), which formed the basis of the British Library. This 12th-century manuscript is justly famous for the cycle of miniatures depicting scenes from the Old Testament, the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary, and the Second Coming and Last Judgement, which precede the text of the Book of Psalms. Inspiring, edifying and terrifying in equal measure, the miniatures of The Winchester Psalter represent the pinnacle of English Romanesque manuscript illumination.
